The eight Olympic weight classes

The Olympic program uses four classes per gender. They are not the same as the many divisions you see at national and club events, so a student who competes at one weight in the US may need to move up or down to fit an Olympic class.

GenderWeight classes
Men-58 kg, -68 kg, -80 kg, +80 kg
Women-49 kg, -57 kg, -67 kg, +67 kg

Our guide to taekwondo weight classes shows how the Olympic classes compare with World Taekwondo, USA Taekwondo and youth divisions.

The five ways to earn a place

Of the 128 places, 120 go through three main pathways. Eight more are set aside for the host country and for universality places.

PathwayPlacesHow it works
WT Olympic Ranking40The top 5 athletes in each weight class in the ranking published in January 2028. The 2027 Grand Prix Final counts toward it
Grand Slam Champions Series8The top-ranked athlete in each weight class in the merit standings after the 2027 series
Continental qualification tournaments72Africa, Asia, Europe and Pan America have 16 places each. Oceania has 8
Host countryUp to 4Two men and two women, seeded fourth. Reduced by any places the host wins through the ranking or Grand Slam
Universality4Allocated by the Tripartite Commission. Requests from national Olympic committees are due January 15, 2028

The ranking and Grand Slam routes are the ones most athletes aim for, because a place won there belongs to the country rather than a single tournament result. The World Taekwondo Grand Prix series feeds the ranking all season.

How many athletes one country can send

Each country can enter up to 4 men and 4 women through the ranking and Grand Slam routes, with one athlete per weight class. Through the continental qualification tournaments, a country can add up to 2 men and 2 women, again one per class.

Continental places are open only to countries that finish with fewer than two quota places per gender from the ranking and Grand Slam routes. A strong team that fills its places through points cannot also use the continental route to add more.

Who is eligible

Every athlete must be born on or before December 31, 2011, hold a Kukkiwon dan certificate, and hold a World Taekwondo Global Athlete Licence. The dan certificate is the same black belt rank described in our guide to taekwondo black belts, issued through Kukkiwon.

Athletes who qualify through continental, host or universality places must also meet at least one performance criterion. Reaching the round of 16 or better at the 2025 or 2027 World Taekwondo Championships is one of them. Others include a medal at a listed World Taekwondo event, a top-20 world ranking, a quarterfinal or better at a continental championship or qualifier, or a national title.

What this means for families and students

Most students who read this will never chase an Olympic place, but the system shapes the sport you see. The weight classes, the Kukkiwon dan requirement and the ranking events are the same structure that national teams use to pick athletes. Parents with a competitive child can use it as a map: the first step is a school that trains WT-style sparring, which our guide to WT, ITF and ATA taekwondo explains.
