Which one should you pick?
| If you want to… | Look at |
|---|---|
| Compete in the Olympic sport or at WT events | WT / Kukkiwon-style school |
| Learn traditional patterns and hand technique | ITF school |
| Follow a fixed curriculum with frequent testing | ATA school |
| Just try taekwondo near home | Whichever school has the best instructor and a free trial class |
The instructor and the class matter more than the logo on the wall. Visit two or three schools before you decide, and see our school checklist.
Kukkiwon and WT: what is the difference?
Kukkiwon is the headquarters that certifies black belt ranks and sets the technical standard. World Taekwondo governs the sport, including the Olympic events and international rules. Many schools mention both because their black belts are Kukkiwon-registered and their students compete under WT rules.
How belts compare
The ranks below black differ in color and count. See the full tables on the belt order page, or look up a rank on the belt finder.
Frequently asked questions
Is WT or ITF better?
Neither is better. WT is the Olympic sport. ITF teaches Chang Hon patterns and allows punches to the head. Choose by your goals.
Can I switch from ITF to WT?
Yes, but expect to learn new forms. Many schools will place you by skill, and some require you to start from a lower belt.
Is ATA real taekwondo?
Yes. ATA is a US-based taekwondo organization founded in 1969 with its own forms and rank system.
Do WT and ITF recognize each other’s belts?
Not automatically. Rank recognition is up to each organization and school.
Which style is best for kids?
Any of them can work. Look for a patient instructor, clear safety rules and a free trial class.
