The 2027 event calendar

The season spans about 33 weeks. The longest gap is 60 days, between the Team Trials on January 17 and the U.S. Open on March 18. The shortest is 17 days, between the American Open West on June 20 and the National Championships on July 7.

The World Championships overlap the Nationals

The U.S. National Championships (July 7 to 11) share their start date with the World Taekwondo Championships in Astana, which run July 7 to 13. Athletes cannot be at both, so a fighter aiming at the world stage and one fighting for a national title are in different places that week.

The World Championships also count in the Olympic path: a round of 16 finish or better at the 2027 event is one of the criteria for some qualification routes. Our guide to LA28 taekwondo qualification has the full rules, and the Astana event page has the dates.

How to plan the year

For a family with a competing student, the first decision is which events fit the child’s level. Nationals and the Team Trials are built for national-team contenders. The Open events are the usual entry points for strong club competitors.

  1. Choose the two or three events that match the athlete’s level and dan or gup rank.
  2. Book travel once the host city is announced on the USA Taekwondo event page.
  3. Check the weight division the athlete will enter. Our guide to taekwondo weight classes explains how divisions work.
  4. Budget for entry, travel and gear. See the cost of taekwondo for typical monthly tuition.

Competition is optional. Many students train for years without entering a tournament, and the beginner guide explains what to expect first.

Poomsae and other divisions

USA Taekwondo events can include forms (poomsae) as well as sparring. If your child prefers forms, read our guide to poomsae competition and check the event page for which divisions each event offers.
