How Long Does It Take to Get a Black Belt in Taekwondo?
Plan on 3 to 5 years of steady training. Classes per week and your school’s pace decide where you land.
Reviewed by Daniel Reyes, 4th dan Kukkiwon, 18 years teaching | Last checked: October 26, 2026Most students earn a first-degree black belt in 3 to 5 years. Training twice a week usually takes about 3.5 years, three times a week about 2.5 years and once a week 6 years or more. A school that promises a black belt in under 2 years is moving too fast. The Kukkiwon minimum age for a 1st Dan is 15, so children receive a Poom junior black belt first.
Time by classes per week
A common planning figure is about 300 classes from white belt to 1st Dan at a typical school. Most students attend about 44 weeks a year after holidays, illness and school breaks.
| Classes per week | Typical time to 1st Dan |
|---|---|
| 1 | 6 to 7 years |
| 2 | 3 to 4 years |
| 3 | 2 to 3 years |
| 4 or more | 1.5 to 2.5 years |
Our black belt time estimator uses the same math and lets you change the pace.
Time by style
WT and Kukkiwon schools usually require 10 gup grades, each tested about every 2 to 4 months. ITF schools use a similar ladder. The ATA ladder has more steps, so the same attendance can take a little longer, while a faster ATA program may test more often. Compare the stages in the WT belt order, ITF belt order and ATA belt order.
Children, teens and adults
Children under 15 receive a Poom black belt that converts to a Dan at 15. Many reach Poom in 4 to 6 years because they attend fewer hours per week. Adults tend to move at the same pace as teens, with more time in each belt for forms and kicking technique. See taekwondo for kids and taekwondo for adults.
What slows you down
- Missed classes and long breaks.
- Waiting for the next test date at a school that tests only twice a year.
- A school that requires a minimum number of classes per belt.
- Injury. Do not train through pain.
When fast is a warning sign
A school that offers a black belt in 12 to 18 months for a flat fee is selling a belt, not a skill. Read our red flags guide and ask what the test covers. A first-degree black belt means you know the basics well. It does not mean you have mastered the art.
After the first black belt
Kukkiwon sets minimum waits between Dan ranks of 1 year (1st to 2nd), 2 years (2nd to 3rd), 3 years (3rd to 4th) and 4 years (4th to 5th). Use the Dan waiting-time calculator to find your earliest next test.
