Taekwondo vs Karate: Which Should You Choose?
Taekwondo is Korean and kick-heavy. Karate is Japanese and uses hands and feet more evenly. Here is how they differ in class.

Karate came from Okinawa and Japan and trains punches, blocks and kicks in balance. Taekwondo has been an Olympic medal sport since 2000. Karate appeared at the Tokyo 2020 Games. For most beginners the school and the teacher matter more than the label.

Kicks versus hands
Taekwondo puts the legs first. Classes spend a lot of time on stretching, kicking drills and footwork, and sparring is built around kicks. Karate styles teach a wider range of hand techniques and close-range work. If you want to learn high kicks, taekwondo is the better fit. If you prefer punching and grappling-style defense, look at karate or a mixed art.
Sparring and competition
World Taekwondo sparring uses electronic scoring and gives more points to head kicks and spinning kicks. See the WT competition rules. Karate competition varies by organization, and Olympic-style karate was held once. If you want a clear route to national and international competition, taekwondo is easier to find a club for, and the Olympic path is described in Olympic taekwondo.
Which to choose
- Pick taekwondo for kicks, fitness, forms and a clear competition route.
- Pick karate for hand techniques, a wider range of traditional styles and a strong kata culture.
- Choose by school first. A good instructor in either art beats a poor one in the other.
Our school choosing guide applies to karate too.
