Best Taekwondo Stretching Gear: What You Need at Home
You can build a good flexibility routine with a mat, a strap and a wall. This guide shows what each tool is for and how it fits the weekly stretching dose the research supports.
Reviewed by Daniel Reyes, 4th dan Kukkiwon, 18 years teaching | Last checked: October 29, 2026A 2024 meta-analysis in Sports Medicine found that about 10 minutes of static stretching per muscle group per week produces long-term range-of-motion gains, with a median hold of 30 seconds. That means a short routine is enough, and the gear is simple: a non-slip mat, a strap or band for hamstrings and hips, and a wall or doorway. Skip tools you will not use every week.
| Weekly dose | About 10 minutes per muscle group |
|---|---|
| One-session gain | About 4 minutes per muscle group |
| Median hold | 30 seconds |
| Core kit | Mat, strap, wall space |
| Optional | Foam roller, blocks, a stretching machine |
The dose the research supports
| Goal | Per muscle group | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate range-of-motion gain in one session | About 4 minutes | 2024 meta-analysis, Sports Medicine |
| Long-term gains | About 10 minutes per week | Same review |
| More than 10 minutes a week | No clear extra benefit | Same review |
| Typical hold | 30 seconds (median) | Same review |
For the full weekly plan, see our flexibility guide. Gear should make that plan easier, not longer.
The core kit
| Tool | What it does | Check before you buy |
|---|---|---|
| Non-slip mat | Gives grip and cushion on a hard floor | Thickness that does not wobble under a split; size for your height |
| Strap or band | Lets you hold a hamstring or hip stretch without gripping your foot | Length, and a non-stretch material if you want a firm hold |
| Wall or doorway | Supports hamstring and leg-up stretches | Free floor space and a clean wall |
| Blocks | Raise the floor in splits or forward folds | Stable base and non-slip surface |
Optional tools
| Tool | Use | Think twice if |
|---|---|---|
| Foam roller | Warm-up and recovery work | You will not use it weekly |
| Stretching machine or split trainer | Holds the legs in a fixed position | It forces a range you cannot control. Keep the load easy to release |
| Resistance band with handles | Active leg lifts | You already do leg raises with a strap |
A machine adds cost and takes floor space. If you buy one, use it with the same weekly dose and stop if you feel sharp pain.
How to use the gear
- Pick the muscle groups that limit your kicks: hamstrings, hip flexors, adductors and calves.
- Split your weekly minutes: for example, 3 sessions with about 3 to 4 minutes per muscle group each time.
- Hold each stretch around 30 seconds and stay in a range you can control.
- Stretch after class or when warm.

Frequently asked questions
What gear do I need to stretch for taekwondo?
A non-slip mat, a strap or band and a wall are enough. Blocks, foam rollers and machines are optional.
How long should I stretch each week?
About 10 minutes per muscle group per week for long-term gains, according to a 2024 meta-analysis. More than that showed no clear extra benefit.
How long should I hold each stretch?
The median hold in the research was 30 seconds.
Is a stretching machine worth it?
Only if you will use it weekly and can release the load quickly. A mat, a strap and a wall give the same dose.
