Taekwondo Belt Display: Racks, Frames and Cases Compared
A belt display turns years of training into something you can see. This guide compares the four main types and shows how to size one for the ranks you will earn.
Reviewed by Daniel Reyes, 4th dan Kukkiwon, 18 years teaching | Last checked: October 26, 2026Four types of belt display are common: wall racks with horizontal bars, framed shadow boxes, glass-front cases and simple hangers or hooks. A WT and Kukkiwon student earns 10 gup ranks (10th to 1st gup) before the black belt, so a display for the full path needs 11 slots, plus extra room for dan ranks. Mount it away from direct sun, fasten it to wall studs or use proper anchors, and fold each belt the same way.
| Color belt ranks (WT and Kukkiwon) | 10 gup ranks, 10th gup to 1st gup |
|---|---|
| Slots for the full path to black belt | 11 |
| Common display types | Wall rack, shadow box frame, glass case, hangers and hooks |
| Last color belt in one common layout | 1st gup, black stripe |
| Black belt tests | 1st dan after the 1st gup; later dan ranks follow the minimum waits |
| Minimum wait 1st to 2nd dan | 1 year |
The four display types
| Type | How it works | Good for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wall rack | Horizontal bars or pegs, one belt per row | Showing every belt in order, adding belts as you earn them | Takes wall space; belts hang loose |
| Shadow box frame | Deep frame with a back panel, belts mounted inside | A single belt or a few, with a certificate and photo | Fixed number of slots; harder to add belts |
| Glass-front case | Enclosed cabinet or wall case | Dust protection, trophies and medals alongside belts | Heavier, needs a stud mount |
| Hangers and hooks | Rail or pegs with hooks | Cheap, flexible, easy to expand | No dust cover; belts can slip |
How many slots do you need?
| Goal | Belts to display | Slots needed |
|---|---|---|
| Color belts up to 1st gup | 10 | 10 |
| Plus the first black belt | 11 | 11 |
| Black belt with later dan ranks | 11 plus one per dan rank | 12 or more |
| Child still progressing | Start with the current belts | Choose a rack that adds rows |
One common school layout runs white, yellow stripe, yellow, orange, green, purple, blue, brown, red and black stripe before black. Your school may use a different order. See WT and Kukkiwon belt order and belt colors and meanings.
Planning for black belt and beyond
After the 1st dan, Kukkiwon sets minimum waits of 1 year (1st to 2nd dan), 2 years (2nd to 3rd), 3 years (3rd to 4th) and 4 years (4th to 5th). A student testing at every minimum wait reaches 5th dan 10 years after the first black belt. If you want one display for a long career, choose a rack with spare rows. Most black belts keep their dan certificate with the belt, and the Kukkiwon certification guide explains what the certificate shows.
What to check before you buy
- Material. Solid wood or metal holds up better than thin plastic.
- Mounting. Check whether the display needs studs or comes with wall anchors that suit your wall.
- Bar spacing. Belts fold in different ways, so leave room for the knot.
- Dust. A cover or frame keeps belts clean.
- Extras. Space for a certificate, a photo or a medal.
- Expandability. Can you add a row later?
Care and placement
| Do | Why |
|---|---|
| Keep belts out of direct sun | Strong light fades dyed fabric |
| Hang in a dry room | Damp causes mildew |
| Fold or hang each belt the same way | The set looks neat and takes less room |
| Leave the knot or tie it the same way each time | It keeps the shape |
| Dust with a dry cloth | Washing is not needed for display |
Display for kids
Children earn belts quickly, often every few months. A wall rack that adds one belt at a time lets them place each belt after a test. Mount it at their eye height and keep the display where they will see it. Many schools hold tests every 4 months, so a student can fill 10 slots in about 3 years. See the kids guide for how long each stage takes.
As a gift
A rack with a nameplate or engraving suits a first black belt. Pick a size that leaves room for the dan ranks that follow, and check the belt width of the student’s school before you buy.
Frequently asked questions
How many belts should a display hold?
Eleven covers the 10 gup ranks plus the first black belt. Add one slot for each dan rank you plan to earn.
How do I hang a taekwondo belt?
Hang it over a bar or fold it and place it on a peg. Keep the knot or fold the same for each belt.
What is the best way to display black belts?
A rack with a few rows or a shadow box with the certificate beside it.
Can I wash a belt before displaying it?
You do not need to. Dust it with a dry cloth. Follow your school custom on washing.
Where should I put a belt display?
On a wall out of direct sunlight in a dry room, fastened to a stud or with proper anchors.
Does a belt display need glass?
No. A rack is enough. A glass case keeps dust off and holds medals.
Do I display belts from a different style?
Yes. Many students display belts from several organizations in separate rows.
How long does it take to fill a 10-belt rack?
About 3 years in a school that tests every 4 months.
