Taekwondo Gear Size Guide

Measure your head to find a head guard size, then use the fit checks for the rest of the set.

Head guards are sized by head circumference, so a tape measure gives a reliable answer. Trunk protectors, shin guards and forearm guards are sized by height and limb length, and each maker publishes its own chart, so use the fit checks below with the maker’s chart.

Head guard size bands

SizeHead circumference
X-Small45 to 49.5 cm (18 to 19.5 in)
Small49.5 to 52.5 cm (19.5 to 20.5 in)
Medium52.5 to 56.5 cm (21 to 22 in)
Large56.5 to 59 cm (22.5 to 23 in)
X-Large59 to 62 cm (23.5 to 24.5 in)
XX-Large62 to 64 cm (24.5 to 25 in)

These bands follow a published size chart from a U.S. martial arts school and are rounded so they do not leave gaps. Makers differ by a size, so treat the result as a starting point and check the maker’s chart.

Fit checks for the rest of the set

  • Trunk protector: it should cover from the collarbone to the hip bones with no gap at the sides. Choose the maker’s size for your height, then check that you can breathe and raise your arms.
  • Shin guards: they should cover the shin from just below the knee to the ankle bone and not slide when you kick.
  • Forearm guards: wrist to just below the elbow, snug enough that they do not rotate.
  • Hand protectors: a closed fist with no loose fabric over the fingers.
  • Kids: buy a size that fits now. Gear that is too big moves and protects less.
