Black Belt Time Estimator

Enter how often you train and how fast your school moves to see a realistic time to first-degree black belt.

Reviewed by Daniel Reyes, 4th dan Kukkiwon, 18 years teaching  |  Last checked: October 26, 2026

This estimator divides the classes left until black belt by the classes you attend each year. It assumes about 300 classes from white belt to 1st Dan at a typical school, 44 training weeks a year and a range of 20 percent either way.

How the estimate works

Classes left equal the classes to black belt for your school pace, multiplied by the share of the ladder you still have to climb. A student at 5th gup, halfway up a 10-gup ladder, has about half the classes left. Divide by classes per week times weeks per year to get years. A 20 percent range covers missed classes and test dates. Read how long it takes to get a black belt for what slows people down.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this estimator?

It is a planning tool. Your school sets the real test dates and pass marks.

What if my school tests twice a year?

Choose the slow pace, since waiting for test dates adds time.

Does age change the result?

Not in this tool. Children under 15 receive a Poom first and convert to Dan at 15.
