Best Taekwondo Sparring Gear Sets: How to Choose

Pick a complete set from a trusted maker, match the size to your height and ask your school before you buy.

A good sparring set includes a head guard, trunk protector, shin and forearm guards, hand protectors and a groin guard. For school classes, a mid-priced set from a known maker is enough. For World Taekwondo events, the headgear and trunk protector must come from an approved maker such as Adidas, Daedo, Hasado, KPNP, Kwon, Maxwin, Mooto, Tusah or Wacoku.

What a set includes

Most sets sell as a bundle: head guard, trunk protector, forearm and shin guards, hand protectors and a groin guard. A mouthguard is almost always sold separately because it has to fit your mouth. Foot protectors may be extra. Compare what is in each bundle before you compare prices.

Class set or competition set

  • School classes: a mid-range bundle that is padded, easy to wash and fits. Brand does not matter much.
  • Local tournaments: check the event notice. Some require WT-recognized equipment, some do not.
  • WT-sanctioned events: approved brands only, with electronic sensor equipment where used.

How to compare sets

  1. Fit. Ill-fitting gear moves and protects less. Use the maker’s chart and your height.
  2. Padding. Dense foam should rebound quickly. Crumbling foam is a sign to replace.
  3. Closures. Velcro or elastic that stays tight through a full round.
  4. Cleaning. Smooth faces and removable liners are easy to wipe down.
  5. Approval. If you will compete, check the WT list for each piece.

Kids’ sets

Children outgrow sets quickly. Buy one size up if the gear can be adjusted. Choose a set with extra padding on the shins and groin, and ask the instructor whether the school provides loaner gear for beginners.

How long a set lasts

A set used twice a week lasts 1 to 3 years. Replace a head guard after a hard blow even if it looks fine. Check straps and seams every few months.
