You can start taekwondo at 30, 45 or 60. Here is what adult classes involve and how to start safely.

It is not too late. Adults start taekwondo at every age, and most schools run beginner classes for ages 13 and up. You do not need to be flexible or fit first. A first black belt takes 3 to 5 years of steady training, and the Kukkiwon minimum age for a first Dan is 15, so there is no upper age limit.

Starting late is normal

Many adult students begin after 30. Some come to lose weight, some for stress, some because a child started and they joined in. HMD Academy in Chicago, for example, runs adult classes on weekday evenings and Saturday mornings, so a work schedule is rarely a barrier.

You do not need flexibility before you start. Flexibility is trained in class. Expect stretching at the start of every session and slow progress on high kicks.

What an adult class looks like

  • Warm-up: 10 minutes of jogging, stretching and light drills.
  • Basics: stances, blocks, punches and kicks done in lines.
  • Forms: a set pattern of moves. White belts learn the first form, such as Taegeuk 1 in WT-style schools.
  • Partner drills and sparring: optional at first. Most schools introduce light sparring at the yellow or green belt.

Classes run 45 to 60 minutes. See our beginner guide for a first-class checklist.

Fitness, age and injuries

Check with a doctor if you have a heart condition, joint problems or have not exercised in years. Tell the instructor about old injuries on the first day. A good teacher will adjust kicks for knees, hips and backs.

Common beginner problems are sore hips, tight hamstrings and blisters on the feet from bare mat work. They fade within a few weeks. Skip the high kick for the first month. Aim for control, not height.

Black belt time for adults

Adults training twice a week usually take 3 to 5 years to reach a first-degree black belt. Faster is possible at schools that test often, but a belt earned in under two years is a warning sign. Use the black belt time guide and the estimator to plan your own timeline.

Kukkiwon sets the minimum age for a first Dan at 15, with no upper limit. Dan promotions then require 1 year (to 2nd Dan), 2 years (to 3rd), 3 years (to 4th) and 4 years (to 5th) of training between ranks.

Choosing an adult-friendly school

Look for an adult-only or mixed teen and adult class, an instructor who corrects you without shouting and a trial class. Ask what ages are in the class and whether sparring is required. Our school directory lists trial class details where the school publishes them, and the cost guide shows what monthly fees and belt tests add up to.

Kukkiwon sets a minimum age of 15 for a first Dan but no maximum.

Do adults have to spar?

Not always. Most schools let adults skip sparring or choose light contact.
