Taekwondo for Beginners: Your First Class
What to wear, what to bring, what happens in the room and how to feel less lost in week one.
Reviewed by Daniel Reyes, 4th dan Kukkiwon, 18 years teaching | Last checked: October 20, 2026Wear loose, comfortable clothes you can kick in, bring water, and arrive 10 minutes early. You will be barefoot on a mat. Most schools give a uniform after the trial. Classes usually run warm-up, basics, a form and partner drills. You do not need to be flexible or fit first. Ask the school what its age groups and trial policy are.
What to wear and bring
- Wear: a t-shirt and loose pants or athletic shorts that allow high kicks. Skip jewelry and tie back long hair.
- Bring: a water bottle and a small towel.
- Feet: taekwondo is usually trained barefoot, so keep nails trimmed and feet clean.
- Uniform: usually bought after the trial. See what it costs.
What happens in a class
Each school has its own format, but a beginner class often follows this shape:
- Bow in and warm-up. Light cardio and stretching.
- Basics. Stances, blocks, punches and kicks in lines.
- Forms. A short pattern for your rank. Beginners start with the first one.
- Partner drills. Slow, controlled practice with pads or a partner.
- Cool-down and bow out.
Sparring is usually introduced later and with gear. See WT vs ITF vs ATA for how sparring rules differ.
Manners that help
- Bow when you enter and leave the training floor.
- Be on time, and tell the instructor if you must leave early.
- Listen when the instructor is talking.
- Tell the instructor about injuries or health limits before class.
Common first-class worries
- “I am not flexible.” Flexibility improves with practice, and instructors expect beginners to start tight.
- “I am out of shape.” You can rest and work at your own level.
- “Everyone else is better.” Your school groups students by rank. You will be with other white belts.
- “I will be hit.” Beginners do not spar hard on day one. Ask about the school’s policy.
What comes after the first class
You start as a white belt. Most schools test for the next color every few months. See the belt order and what happens at a belt test. To pick a school, use our checklist.
