A color belt test is usually a short class where you show your form, basic techniques and often some self-defense or sparring for the instructor. Color belt test fees are commonly $35 to $100, with tests often every 2 to 3 months. What is tested and how hard it is differs by school, so ask for the written syllabus.

This is a general picture, not a rule. Federations do not set color belt test content, so each school decides.

Before the test

  • Ask the instructor for the written test requirements and the form you need.
  • Check the attendance rule. Many schools expect a set number of classes since your last test.
  • Find out the fee, the date and the dress code.
  • Practice the form slowly at home, then at test speed. Say the count out loud.
  • Sleep and eat normally the night before.

On test day

Arrive early with a clean uniform, your belt on, and any gear the school asks for. Warm up with the group. During the test, bow when you enter the floor, answer with a loud and clear “yes, sir” or “yes, ma’am” if your school uses that style, and keep going if you slip. Instructors watch effort and control more than perfection.

What if I do not pass?

Many schools only let students test when the instructor thinks they are ready, so a test often works as a final check. If you are told to retest, ask for the specific things to fix and a date for retesting. A fee for a retest is a question for the front desk before you sign up.

Black belt tests are different

A black belt test is longer and often has a written part, a thesis or other extras at some schools. Black belts under Kukkiwon rules need to meet age and waiting-time rules. See our guide to black belt ranks. Black belt test fees are often $150 to $600 or more, and some schools charge $1,000 or more with Kukkiwon registration.

Helping a nervous child

  • Run through the test at home like a game, with a parent as the instructor.
  • Remind your child that the instructor wants them to pass.
  • Do not promise a reward for passing. Praise the effort.
  • If the nerves are strong, tell the instructor beforehand.
